We went from coconut to cappuccino in record time, leaving the Sugar Shack at 9.00am and arriving at Ngurah Rai airport in Bali at 5.00pm. Our senses were immediately assaulted by the visual pollution of fluorescent lights, excessive signage and obese bogans in Bintang singlets. Noise, cigarette smoke, carbon monoxide and enclosed spaces. I wanted to run straight back onto the tarmac and go home.
First stop the next morning was The Tuck Shop in Seminyak, and with the delivery of a soy latte I accepted that I had finally arrived. No use fighting it. Embrace the shops. Go forth and consume.
While Tom and Tinggi stroked new surfboards, I fluffed up cushions, fingered silk dresses and tried on cheekily short outfits in the countless boutiques of Legian and Seminyak. Met the aquamen for lunch at The Junction , one of the newest additions to Jalan Oberoi (see my review here). We are not in Kansas anymore.
